19 Action News Anchor

PAUL JONCICH

Whether it's on the street or at the anchor desk, Paul Joncich and his high energy style helps put the action in 19 Action News.  An award winning newsman, Paul comes to WOIO from the CBS affiliate in Sacramento where he was the primary weeknight anchor.

Paul brings a wealth of experience to WOIO's anchor desk. He's covered the big stories: presidential and papal visits, earthquakes and forest fires. When it comes to news, Paul enjoys a front row seat.  Paul has won Emmy awards for his enterprise and general news reporting and has been honored by the Associated Press for sports and investigative reporting.

His most memorable moments include being among the first local TV news crews inside the Soviet Union after the fall of Communism, witnessing the execution of a serial killer in San Quentin prison, and playing on a semi-pro football team-a story he won't forget. (roughed up, Paul needed 15 stitches to repair his chin)  Paul likes to throw himself into his stories.

Before being bitten by the news bug, Paul wanted to be a professional baseball player.  He played shortstop at Loyola Marymount University but his dream of making it to the pros died when he wasn't drafted.

If you have the time, Paul will tell you stories about playing against guys like Mark McGwire, Kevin Gross and Jack Del Rio.  A big sports fan, Paul still plays baseball and tennis, and by keeping a football in his trunk, he's always ready for a game.

In addition to KOVR in Sacramento, Paul's career stops include KNXV in Phoenix and KUSA in Denver.  Now he's excited to call Cleveland home.  "My family and I look forward to many happy years in northern Ohio.  We're floored by the warmth of the people, and thankful to be able to raise our children in the extraordinary neighborhoods of this city."

Paul and his wife will certainly have their hands full.  They have three young children who are full of energy and ready to explore Northern Ohio.
