Man Who Stole From Salvation Army Spends Night On The Streets

Posted: Updated:

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (AP) - Authorities in northeast Ohio say a Salvation Army worker who was ordered by a judge to spend a night homeless ducked in and out of government buildings for warmth during his time on the streets.

Twenty-eight-year-old Nathen Smith stole a holiday kettle last month that contained about $250.

Painesville Municipal Judge Michael Cicconetti yesterday ordered Smith to be fitted with a GPS device to track his moves during his night away from home.

Smith returned to court this morning with red eyes and red cheeks.

Police arrested Smith at his mother's house after a co-worker reported that one of eight kettles was missing.

The Salvation Army uses kettle donations to help pay for food, clothing and shelter for the homeless.
